    Understanding inter-organizational decision coordination

    This article develops a theoretical framework to investigate the interaction and coordination of decision-making processes in a supply chain with multiple and inter-dependent suppliers and customers. Design/Methodology/Approach: Three longitudinal case studies on the decision coordination processes between a European toy supplier and three retailers. Findings: The case studies found different mental models, decision-making behaviours, coordination behaviours and ordering behaviours even though the toy supplier and the three retailers observed quite the same material flow behaviours. The study found explanations for these diverse behaviours by analyzing the mental models and decision-making behaviours of each involved party. Originality/value: The findings explain the conditions which lead to undesirable mental models and decision-making behaviours which affect the coordination of decisions among supply chain members

    This editorial introduces the unique attributes of this special issue in the era of climate change, modern slavery, and big data. This special issue envisages the depth of penetration of sustainability, from strategy to the operations level, to understand the extent to which sustainability has attracted researchers and practitioners in dealing with various facets of operations management. Overall, it is encouraging to notice the research developments in all facets of operations management except process type, layout type, forecasting, and queuing. Out of three sustainability dimensions, this special issue received substantial contributions on economic and environmental aspects. All the contributions had at least two sustainability components in their decision models as well as newer analytical solutions. At the end, this piece outlines future research challenges and potential research opportunities

    Information technology for competitive advantage within logistics and supply chains: a review

    This paper offers a systematic review of the literature on the use of information technology (IT) in logistics and supply chain management to achieve competitive advantage. While IT has revolutionized traditional logistics and supply chains to achieve numerous benefits such as increased efficiency and responsiveness, it is not still clear to what extend IT has contributed to competitive advantage within logistics and supply chains. This paper contributes to this debate by: (i) reporting the literature on the role of IT in achieving competitive advantage within logistics and supply chains based on the linkages between ‘adaptation’, ‘alignment’, and ‘agility’, (triple A’s) (Lee, 2004), and (ii) discussing managerial implications and identifying future research directions

    This editorial introduces the purpose of the special issue with the summary of three perspectives of innovations in inclusive manufacturing such as people-oriented, environmental oriented and technology-oriented innovations. The editorial summarises the accepted papers based on the three perspectives of inclusive manufacturing innovation classification. The inclusive manufacturing way forward is discussed in the future research directions section. Overall this call didn’t receive many people-oriented innovation submissions. However, there are a decent amount of work in environmental and technology-oriented innovations. Hopefully, this editorial piece will draw attention towards people-oriented innovation from the manufacturing researchers in the future

    Cloud platforms for remote monitoring system : a comparative case study

    Currently, industrial companies are increasingly introducing services to extend their tangible products. Remote monitoring solutions are one of the most implemented services by machine builders to manage their relationship with customers and also improve their business performance in the digital manufacturing era. However, the conventional method of remote monitoring cannot fulfil distributed business environments. Therefore, new solutions are needed to enable remote connection in manufacturing. By reviewing recent literature and proposing new features for software which can be used for remote service and operations, this research paper introduces a remote monitoring system connecting into a central cloud-based system with edge computing network architecture, namely Cloud-based Remote Monitoring (CloudRM). This proposed CloudRM also has been implemented in two different case companies for analysis and evaluation from a value proposition and technical implementation point of view.     IoT powered servitization of manufacturing – an exploratory case study

    More than ever companies are challenged to rethink their offerings while simultaneously being provided with a unique opportunity for creating or recreating their product-service systems. This paper seeks to address how servitisation can utilise the third wave of Internet development, referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT), which may unlock the potential for innovative product-service systems on an unprecedented scale. By providing an analysis of this technological breakthrough and the literature on servitisation, these concepts are combined to address the question of how organisations offering product-service systems can reap the benefits that the IoT. An analysis of three successful IoT implementation cases in manufacturing companies, representing different industry sectors such as metal processing, power generation and distribution, is provided. The results of the empirical research presented in the paper provide an insight into different ways of creating value in servitisation. The paper also proposes a framework that is aimed at proving a better understanding of how companies can create value, and add it to their servitisation processes with, the data obtained by the IoT based solutions. From the value chain perspective, IoT aided servitisation enables organisations to extend their value chains in order better serve their customers which, in turn, might result in increased profitability. The article proposes further research avenues, and offers valuable insight for practitioners.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed
